The Light Of The World

If you are reading this post, you definitely will be surprised at the title. Relax I am not trying to introduce a new doctrine, far from it. If you follow through, you will see where I am going with all this.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

This statement was made by the greatest man that lived on the face of the earth. His name is Jesus. I love Jesus because he did one of the greatest things on earth; he died for humanity so that through Him we can live a life of peace and have a personal relationship with God.

It’s interesting to note that when Jesus made this statement, most people did not understand what he meant especially the Jews who had the mindset of a great king that would take over the world.

The Jews had gone through a harsh reality in the world. They had been through a cycle of being defeated by their enemies and being delivered to rebuild their nation. They needed a savior that would reclaim their lost glory and shake the very face of the earth and they had been promised that a savior will come and save the world but how would he achieve this? They had no clue.

When their Saviour finally came, they could not accept Him because he did not fit the profile of the Saviour. He was not from a royal family and was just a carpenter but today, he is in more than a billion people and getting new members every day.

How did he achieve this? He did not control a great army or rule as an earthly king but he made changes that were significant. Here is what he did:

  1. He developed and cultivated uneducated men into leaders (Disciples). These leaders were instrumental to the spreading of the gospel (Acts of Apostle)
  2. He went about teaching and solving people’s problem.
  3. He sacrificed His Life for us. This caused a great spiritual transformation for humanity.

Note that these changes though insignificant to most people at that time, had a profound effect in time to come. A big change comes by making minute steps. We are taught that a compound is formed from atoms which are really very small. I have met and talked to people who have this vision that it is only when they are at the top that they can make a change.

I am not against such belief but let’s learn from Jesus who had the power and the authority to rule the world, yet he became a mere man to empower Christians to be great men.
