There are life principles that will always stand the test of time. They are old school solutions that have been successful for many generations and can be used to solve today’s problem. What are these principles? Here are just 5 of them.
1. Monitor Your Thoughts
A man was once working in a cold store for a company whose business was preserving fish. One day, one of his colleagues locked him in the cold store without knowledge. The next day, he was discovered dead. However upon further investigation, his colleagues discovered that the plug powering the cold store was unplugged. “How did he die?” was the question going through everyone’s mind.
The story reminds me about a wise saying, “Be careful about what you think, your thought runs your life”. This statement though simple is one of the first principle of guiding your life. The man must have thought he was done for it without knowing that the cold store wasn’t working.
Most people have changed the course of their destiny by their thought process. The event that led to the stepping down of Hosni Sayyid Mubarak in Egypt is an example of how a positive thought process can change the destiny of a nation. The people thought about it so badly that together, they believed in it and they got what they wanted. Guide your life by monitoring your thoughts
2. Readers are Leaders
There is one thing that can shape the life of a man and that is “Information”. No wonder that the internet is embraced by the World. Just with a laptop and an internet modem, you can tap into an information store house and gain knowledge in your area of interest.
Although too much of information can lead to poor decision making especially if they are not from the right source, but lack of information makes one ignorant and the end result is always fatal.
Information is king and if you are not informed then you are deformed. When you take time to study, you will never be ashamed and no one will be able to take the truth away from you.
3. Watch Out For Friends
Bob Marley once sang a song that “Your best friend could be your worst enemy“. There is a truth to this statement. You need to watch out for your friends because they are part of your life. The wrong set of friends could make your life miserable while the right set of friends could make you an achiever. Evil companion does corrupt good manners so watch out.
4. Don’t Make Assumptions
Here is an interesting quote from Lemony Snicket
“Assumptions are dangerous things to make, and like all dangerous things to make — bombs, for instance, or strawberry shortcake — if you make even the tiniest mistake you can find yourself in terrible trouble. Making assumptions simply means believing things are a certain way with little or no evidence that shows you are correct, and you can see at once how this can lead to terrible trouble. For instance, one morning you might wake up and make the assumption that your bed was in the same place that it always was, even though you would have no real evidence that this was so. But when you got out of your bed, you might discover that it had floated out to sea, and now you would be in terrible trouble all because of the incorrect assumption that you’d made. You can see that it is better not to make too many assumptions, particularly in the morning.”
If you are in the habit of making too many assumptions, it is time you reconsider. Making assumption is a terrible business. Assumption without evidence is like driving a Race Car blindfolded and expecting to reach the finish line.
5. Do not Judge
The boy you punched today in the hall committed suicide few minutes ago…
The guy you dumped today loved you with his life…
The girl you called a slut today in class is a virgin…
That boy you called lame, works every night to support his family…
That girl you pushed down today is already being abused at home…
That girl you called fat is already starving herself…
That old man you made fun of because of his ugly scar fought for your country…
The boy you made fun of for crying is doing so because his mother is dying and he can’t do anything about it…
The 15 year old girl you see carrying her baby was defiled at 13…
You thought you know them didn’t you? Guess what, you don’t. You never know what people are going through so pause before you open your mouth judging, criticizing or mocking others. Everyone is fighting their own unique war…Don’t judge anyone!!! Idongesit Ekpo
What a great poem and a reminder of the harm of judging. You have probably experienced a situation where you misjudged an event, a person or friend because you came to a conclusion based on some certain pattern of thought.
It’s best not to read a sentence to a situation rather read the whole book before making a conclusion.
