One day, the fleet-footed god Mercury decided to learn whether mankind still held him in high regard.

Disguising himself as a commoner, he went into a sculptor’s studio and examined the statues on display.

“How much for this statue of Jupiter?” Mercury asked.

“That’s one of my inferior works” the sculptor replied. “You can have it for one drachma.”

“How much for that statue of Juno over there in the corner?”

“That’s one of my favourite works,” said the sculptor. “My asking price is three drachmas”

The god then saw a statue of himself. Now, Mercury was the source of all important communiques from the gods, so he thought his statue would command an exceptionally high price.

So he said “What a beautiful piece of artwork!” he remarked. “How much for this statue of Mercury?”

“Friend,” the sculptor replied with a smile, ” I want to make you one of my loyal, long-term customers so I am willing to make you a bargain. Pay me the prices I quoted you on the Jupiter and Juno statues, and I will throw this one in for free”. Aesop

Everyone loves a compliment. Who doesn’t like to be praised and adored. Who doesn’t want to be honoured. So it is not surprising that Mercury wanted to see how much he was valued by humanity.
